Conservation
Making a difference together
At Ubungane, conservation is the heart of everything
we do and live for. Mike and Siyafunda plays the crucial role in the Makalali Reserve, collecting data
and conducting vital wildlife monitoring.
Guests at Ubungane can explore the groundbreaking efforts taking place in the reserve and at Siyafunda, including lion and elephant monitoring, habitat restoration, and predator-prey studies. We would
love you to join the never ending battle of Conservation
with us. no matter how big or small every effort
and experience you take and share always means something.
Makalali PGR has the longest and most successful elephant immuno contraception program in South Africa and indeed the world. Audrey Kettles, a pioneer
for all elephants, worked, studied here at Makalali, passion and dedication has caved a path for us all to follow,
be proud of and mostly learn. (see link here)
Michael Job and his passion collaborate with international organizations like Panthera, the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT), and WWF, focusing on innovative projects such
as leopard population tracking, buffalo reintroduction, and hyena behavior studies. The mission extends beyond research, involving local communities in education
and creating sustainable futures for South Africa's wildlife. By staying at Ubungane, you're contributing to these initiatives and supporting a broader legacy
of conservation across Makalali.
The Riff Raff story
Our love for wildlife is deeply personal, as seen in the story of Riff Raff. This magnificent elephant taught
us about the delicate balance between humans
and nature. Though his journey ended in heartbreak,
his legacy lives on at Ubungane. His hair rests in
our wedding rings, and his spirit inspires our fight
to protect every creature in this reserve.
